The End of The Beginning.
Chapter Two.
The drive back was long, and gave me plenty of time to think.
With the stereo blasting and my head pounding, I drove as fast as the car would go. Which wasn't actually that fast, I should've chose a better vehicle to steal, but it was too late now, and there weren't many to chose from either.
The bottles of alcohol and pills that littered the back seat stayed unopened, and I had began to think more clearly. Hence the unbearable banging in my head.
I had neither seen nor heard those that were chasing me for some time, but I could still feel them nearby. Their presence. I didn't understand why they chose not to strike, but I decided it was a blessing and thought nothing more of it..
Everything was dusty and bare, all the grass, trees and wildlife were dead, and I couldn't understand how I was so "lucky" to have survived the whole situation..
And as I was thinking this I saw something ahead of me.
At first I thought I was just hallucinating, but there was a definate outline of someone or something about a mile ahead of me, walking.
It wasn't one of those that were chasing after me, I knew it, something was telling me it was safe to approach, so I continued to head towards the figure.
As I got closer I drove slower, not wanting to scare whoever it was up ahead.. I found it funny how I was being so caring towards someone I didn't know, and yet almost laughed at the corpses I had seen so many of earlier, but I carried on nonetheless.. And as I got closer, and closer, a sudden feeling of familiarity crept over me. I didn't know what to think of it.
I turned off the music, brought the car to a steady, slow pace, and began to pull up just infront of the person.
I was shocked.
When I first saw her, all I could think was that she was beautiful, and other-worldly. She was wearing a long black dress, an expensive-looking one at that, high-heels, and had long, dark hair. She didn't fit in this place of death and hollowness. Even before the world was practically destroyed, I don't think she would've fitted in. She was too good for it.
Then I realised that I knew her. I didn't remember where from, but I remember knowing her. I also don't know how I could have forgotten.
"Don't hurt me!" Was the first thing she said.
"It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you, but you're the first person I've seen that's alive since I woke up in this mess. Where are you from? Do you remember what happened at all?" I asked, trying to sound as friendly as possible.
"There were people, they weren't normal.. They tried to chase me but I ran.. Everyone was dead so I ran, and I kept running. I don't know what happened or where I am anymore.. Who are you?"
"Those 'people' that chased you.. they came for me too, so I jumped into that car right there.." I said, pointing at the car, "and drove for hours that way. There's not a person alive as far as I went, but I decided to come back this was.. Back home.. To try and find out what's going on.. Other than my town there's nothing else this way. And now I've found you there might be more survivors, so I think we should head back the way I came."
"'We'? What makes you think I'm going anywhere with you?! You could be out to kill me too!"
I sighed and walked towards the car, and started clearing out the passenger seat. "You're coming with me because if you don't then those things'll come after you, and unless you want to be killed, I suggest you travel by car instead of foot. I'm not expecting you to trust me.. Yet.. But I don't want you to get killed off.."
Then, after a long pause she asked.. "..Why not?"
"Because it feels like we've met, and you seem like a good person.. And besides, if I travel alone I'll go crazy.. And we have alot of travelling to do." I explained.
"Where to?"
"We're heading to the nearest city. Big places have alot of people, meaning possible survivors. And there'll be supplies too. It's the best plan in theory."
"Okay.. Good plan.. Don't expect us to take turns driving though, I can't.. You never told me your name..?"
"Jack.. You?"
"I'll tell you later." She said, giggling and getting into the passenger seat, which I'd finished cleaning.
"I drive fast, and unless you don't like it, I have the music up real loud. We'll get wherever we're going soon."
"That's fine. I pick the music."
"CD's are in the bag next to your feet." I said, and with that we started heading the way I'd come from. Heading past the garage, corpses, and away from all we'd come from.
